Using a Deck of Cards: Rhyming

Using a Deck of Cards for Rhyming

A deck of cards is a very versatile tool to use for learning. This post will show you how to turn a deck of cards into a game to reinforce the concept of rhyming.

Why is rhyming important? The concept of rhyme is directly linked to phonological awareness and phonics is the most common (though definitely not the only!) method to introduce reading to children. Rhyming enables children to become more aware of sounds and to be better able to discriminate sounds.

Objective of the Game

To collect as many cards as possible. Cards are won by being the first to shout out a word that rhymes with the card.

How to play

  1. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile in the centre.

  2. Turn over one card.

  3. Be the quickest to say a word that rhymes with the card. For example:

    1. “Jack” rhymes with smack, sack, rack, tack

    2. “Five” rhymes with jive, hive, dive

  4. The first person to call out a correct rhyming word keeps the card. As you work your way through the deck, you should not repeat a word previously used.

  5. In the event of a tie (where players call out an accurate rhyming word at the same time), the players involved would turn over another card and try again till there is one clear winner who takes all.

  6. The game ends once all cards have been flipped over OR once a previously agreed upon duration is over, say 10 minutes.

  7. Count the number of cards each player has – the player with the most cards wins.
